Coach Daree Merritt
My name is Daree Merritt and nothing excites me more than to tell you how wonderful it is to be a part of this family! I am one of two Physical Education teachers here at Lipscomb Academy Middle School. I have the greatest privilege of working alongside Michael Mays, who is is without a doubt, a blessing to me as well as your children. I feel like I have the best of all worlds seeing my children everyday at school and sharing times with their friends and your children as well. I often feel like I am still a "stay at home mom" at school, because I feel like there is truly no other place I would rather be!
I graduated from Goodpasture Christian High School, and I am a 1991 graduate of Belmont University. I attended Belmont on a four year basketball scholarship while pursuing my Education Degree. I am a 2007 inductee into the Belmont Athletic Hall of Fame. I taught Physical Education for seven years both in elementary, middle and high school. I have coached girls basketball both in the middle school and high school since graduating from college. I have been a part of programs such as Goodpasture Christian, Christ Presbyterian, Pope John Paul and Brentwood Academy. I am presently the Middle School Girls Basketball Coach here at Lipscomb Academy.
I have been married for 18 years to the love of my life, Kevin Merritt, a David Lipscomb Alum. After teaching for five years, I was so blessed to be able to stay at home with my children for 14 years before coming back to work at Lipscomb Academy. We are so blessed to have all four of our children as part of this Lipscomb Academy family. Our son, John Matt (10th grade), and our daughters Ann Michael (8th grade), Mallye (4th grade) and Maddyn (1st grade) all love being here at school with their incredible circle of friends and their families. My son is actively involved in sports, both football and basketball and one of my daughters is now a Lipscomb Academy Cheerleader. You will often find me with a camera strapped around my neck walking the sidelines of many ballgames. I have had a passion not just for physical fitness most of my life, but a love for photography as well, since the birth of my first child. I love snapping pictures of not just my kids, but many Lipscomb Academy kids doing the thing they do best --- showing their true colors!
My husband and I are members of the Brentwood Hills Church of Christ as are so many of our Lipscomb families. We are so busy as a family, both our home family and our Lipscomb Academy family, but we know our lives are all about being family and bonding together in our love for the Lord!
Thank you so much for sharing your children with me! I am so honored to get to spend a small part of my day with them! I truly feel that Physical Education is one of the most important classes your children will attend. They will be evaluated each day simply on their attire, attitude and effort as well as their ability to follow instructions. My goal is to try and instill in them the value of fitness in our everyday lives. I hope they will learn things they will carry with them into their adult lives. Physical fitness so clears our mind of things that stress us, and it has been proven that it certainly has benefits in the classroom as well. I promise to love your children as my own, and to try and make their PE class a happy and fun learning environment! Pray for us daily as we run our race into eternity!

Coach Michael Mays
My name is Michael Mays and I am in my 8th year teaching at LAMS. I would like to begin by telling you about myself. I grew up in Nashville and attended Lipscomb University, earning my undergraduate degree in Health and Physical Education. I also played 4 years of Division 1 basketball for Lipscomb. I began teaching right out of college in 2005. I earned my Master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Lipscomb University in 2008. My wife and I have been married for 3 and 1/2 years and are expecting our first child in September!
At LAHS, I am the head varsity boys and girls golf coach and the assistant varsity basketball coach. I also teach four middle school classes, grades 5-8. Our 5th and 6th grade classes have boys and girls, and 7th and 8th are split by gender. I have the boys and Daree Merritt has the girls. This gives us the opportunity to provide activities appropriate to them.
I believe that Physical Education is extremely important for our kids. In today’s world so many kids live a sedentary lifestyle and do not get the physical activity that they need every day. I cherish the opportunity to instill a love for physical activity in the boys and girls at LA. I feel that I am so blessed to get to work with your children every day in the gym!
At Lipscomb, we have the advantage of our “University Connection”, which allows us to make use of many of LU’s facilities. We have access to the university tennis courts, racquetball courts, a large campus to take exercise walks on, and more. We will have units that are 1-2 weeks that cover a variety of activities. I am passionate about exercise and sports and I look forward to passing that on to my students!
