Lucinda Burris
I am thrilled to be teaching your children this year in Language Arts. This is my twenty-first year teaching middle school Reading and English. I never tire of sharing the excitement of a good story with my students. As we read and write together, I plan to share the skills that a skillful reader and writer with each of them. Fifth grade is a critical stage for students as they are asked to go deeper with these skills and prepare for the challenges of the 21st century. I look forward to working with you and your child as we grow together.
Lipscomb has been home for me since before I was born. I began life as a faculty child, then became a student, a parent, and now a faculty member. Through many, many changes, the spirit at Lipscomb continues to thrive. It is the place to be! My personal interests include reading and many kinds of fiber arts. I sew extensively as well as knitting. I find technology intriguing and actively seek ways to incorporate it into my teaching. I attend the Granny White congregation, where I help with the PowerPoint for worship and teach classes from time to time. My husband, Doug, works as a technology support specialist for Metro Schools. Our daughter works for the public schools.
Katie Holladay
My name is Katie Holladay and I am so excited to be working with you and your child this year! I am very passionate about teaching and have known from a very young age that I want to be a teacher. I have always loved to read and could not be more thrilled to be teaching Language Arts at Lipscomb Academy. I graduated from Lipscomb in May 2012, and was blessed to do my student teaching here with Mrs. Burris and the fifth grade team! As a student at Lipscomb University and while student teaching, I learned to appreciate the blessing of Christian Education. Lipscomb is truly home and such a special place! I value the opportunity to be able to be with your children each day and watch them grow and learn. My goal is to create a positive learning environment and instill a love for learning and Language Arts through memorable and engaging activities.
A little about me: I was born and grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. I was active member of Homewood Church of Christ in Birmingham and now enjoy attending Harpeth Hills. I am a true southern girl with a love for God, my family and friends, reading, good food, and Auburn football! I came to Lipscomb University in 2008, and fell in love with Lipscomb and Nashville! I was a cheerleader at Lipscomb University and coach the Middle School Football Cheerleaders. This is my second year teaching at Lipscomb Academy and I am currently working on my Master's Degree at Lipscomb in Teaching, Learning, and Leading.
Our Program
Fifth graders are blessed to have two periods each day for Language Arts. This allows us to spend quality time reading, writing, and working on the mechanics of English in an integrated way. We plan activities and curriculum together so that all students have a similar experience. Our main goal is for all students to become stronger readers and writers this year.
The Language Arts grade will be figured as follows:
English (25%) + Reading (25%) + Writing (25%) +Spelling (13%) + Outside Reading (12%) = 100%
