Mrs. Pat Wood - 7th Grade Math
Hello! Welcome to 7th grade.
This year
has gotten off to a wonderful start. I
am enjoying getting to know your child.
Thank you for sharing them with me.
7th Grade math if full of learning and having fun in the
processes. My philosophy is to teach the
child, not just the subject. I take each
student where they are academically in math to where they need to be. I will help to build your child’s
self-confidence as well as their confidence and understanding in math. Knowledge is important, with that knowledge
and practice understanding and grades will come. At this age sleep is essential for them to learn
and remember what they have done in class, so it is very important that they
get a good night’s rest every day.
Here is a little information about me. I was born and raised in Miami, FL. Attending college at Lipscomb brought me to Nashville. My husband, Chris, is a dentist. We attend Brentwood Hills Church of Christ. Our daughter, Marjorie Ann, is a professional Stage Manager, for live theater and works out of town. I began my teaching career here at Lipscomb in 1975. There is no place I would rather be than here at Lipscomb Academy. God has granted me the opportunity to serve Him here. I have been blessed by the students that I have taught.
I look forward to working with your child.

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Declares the LORD.
Expectations
Be respectful. Be prepared. Be responsible. Be Christ-like.
Curriculum
We are using Glencoe/McGraw-Hill textbooks. We believe that this curriculum will prepare your child for the ERB Testing, high school mathematics courses, ACT, as well as college. We will cover a wide variety of mathematical topics, while touching on some pre-algebra. All of the material in a chapter is connected and builds day-by-day. It is very important that material is understood and mastered as it is taught.
Homework 25%
Homework will be given daily. There are two types of homework that will be given over each concept. The first homework given is for practice and a completion grade is recorded. After checking and going over homework, students asking questions, and class time spent reviewing each concept will be more fully understood. The second homework that is given will be graded by the teacher. It is ten questions and it is to be done by the student with no help from another person. They may use their book, notes or any other references materials at their disposal. If a student is absent their grade will not be affected. Late homework will be given a 70%. Late work will be accepted until that chapter test is given or taken. I use points for grading homework, one point for each problem.
Daily work 25%
After reviewing a concept we will have a content quiz over each objective to ensure that everyone is gaining the knowledge necessary to be successful on the chapter test. Each quiz will be 5 to 10 questions. I use points for grading quizzes, one point for ever problem. We will also be writing about each chapter and using WPP. Writing about factual information is different and important for students to learn. If they can write about it, they understand it more fully.
Tests 50%
We will have a test every 2 weeks. We will have a ½ Chapter test and then a Chapter test. Tests are graded using 100%. Bonus points will be available on most tests. Difficult questions and using things taught in class will be awarded one bonus point each.
iPads
We are very excited about using the iPad in this class. We won’t use it every day, but most days. Some quizzes will be given on the iPad, using Schoology. You as a parent will be able to access each quiz taken and see each quiz not just the grade. New apps are always coming out and when I find one that will help your child I will ask you to down load it. Each student will be asked to look on Renweb each week, please make sure they know their password. As a wonderful resource, there is a website that is aligned with our text. Here you will find extra examples, practice quizzes, practice tests, tutorial instruction and many other helpful resources. We will access this in class. Please encourage your student to visit it frequently!
Reverse classroom
A video will be posted on RenWeb / Schoology for each objective taught. This will be used if by your child if they are absent. When checking on RenWeb to see what we did in class that day they may watch the video to know how that concept was taught. If your child is having a difficult time understanding what we did they can listen to it again. And if any of my parents want to learn 7th grade math again, feel free to watch.

Grading System:
The math grade will be a combination of points and weighted average.
Homework – 25% - completion grade - # of problems completed/# of problems assigned.
Daily Work – 25% - Anything graded. Quizzes and Classwork
Tests – 50% - All Tests. ½ Chapter tests and Chapter tests
Calculator Use:
We will use calculators a lot this year. However, I retain the right to not allow calculators on certain assignments. Please encourage your child to work without it whenever possible. We will not begin using them until later in this nine-week period. We will start out gradually. All work must be shown at all times, even when using a calculator.
Absences / Late Work:
If there is an unplanned absence, have your child look on RenWeb for assignments. These are posted by noon each day. Encourage your child to read over the objective that was taught that day and attempt the work. The will help him/her to not fall behind. It is your child’s responsibility to see me and to discuss any assignments or to get help on new material. One day missed then one day to make up work. This is where the Reverse Classroom will help.
Any assignments turned in late will only receive 70%. I will only accept late work until the test is taken.
University Connection:
The administration has asked each teacher to have a university connection to help students see our subject matter come alive and see in what way the information taught will be used later in life. We will be working with the financial department. We will leaning about investing money with the Stock Market. More information will be forth coming.
Institute Connection:
The administration has asked each grade level to connect with one of the institutes at the university. The 7th grade has teamed with the Institute for Sustainable Practice. We are trying to educate the next generation. In our future we will have green professionals leading businesses and communities towards a sustainable future. We are recycling in classrooms and in the cafeteria. We are always looking for ways to care for the gift that God has given us.
Contact: [email protected] is the best way reach me. I check my email often during the day. I will respond sometime in a 24 hour window.
