5th Grade Social Studies
Welcome to 5th grade Social Studies. Your child will either have Mrs. Jill Knott or Mrs. Jane Thomas as his/her teacher this year.
Mrs. Knott
Wow! American Geography and History is so fascinating and changing. My goal for the year in Social Studies, is to help each student to gain a better understanding of their country and how it works. By the end of the year each student should have a more complete understanding of basic economics and how a city works. They should also have a better working knowledge of the country in which they live and how it was formed.
A little bit about ME - I have taught 31 years at Lipscomb Academy. I have never even thought about changing from 5th grade. I love this age. I graduated from David Lipscomb College in 1974 with a degree in Home Economics Education. I married the most patient man in the world, Michael Knott, forty-one years ago. We have four children. Michael, Jr. who is in the Navy, Karen who is a ELL coach in Metro, David who works in construction, and Mackenzie who is an ELL teacher in Metro.
After staying home with my first three children I decided to go back to school and get my Elementary Certification. After starting to teach in 1983, I went to school and got my master's in Curriculum and Instruction. I am also Granny to four precious children, Grace, Isabella, Sam, and Joseph.
Mrs. Thomas
What a dream job I have! I get to teach your child about the history and economy of our nation. It is my belief that every child should have a basic understanding of the country they call home. In Social Studies this year we will not only learn facts, but we will also spend a great deal of time discussing those facts and how they affect the USA they live in today. We will learn from the mistakes of our past and celebrate the victories.
A little bit about ME - This is my 18th year as a classroom teacher with 14 of those being at Lipscomb. I have taught in 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. I LOVE middle school! It is my heart. I think middle school students are wonderful people who are in the most important developmental period of their lives. It is a JOY to teach at Lipscomb.. My husband Jeff and I met at Lipscomb University, and he is a Lipscomb 'lifer" as are both of our children. Our son, John Logan is a 3rd year Meteorology major at Western Kentucky University, and our daughter, McCarley, is a Freshman at Lipscomb University where she is an English Education major and a member of the Lady Bisons softball team. I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child.
Our expectations for this year: We expect each child to do his or her best work and help create an atmosphere of learning in the classroom.

The first grading period will primarily focus on landforms of the U.S and how the economy and community systems of our country work together. This study of our economic system will be a part of the Junior Achievement curriculum. We will wrap up this study with a visit to JA Biztown. Later in the fall we will start with the Civil War and move forward through time to present day. Daily grades count as 50% of the grade with tests will count 50% of the grade.
